Biography

Molly is a multidisciplined artist living and working on Arlparra Country in the central Australian desert, 250km northeast of Mparntwe/Alice Springs. Originally from Melbourne, Molly moved to the Urapuntja region to work at the Utopia Art Centre, where the openness of the desert and the boundless movement of the sky became central to her practice. During periods of isolation, she found she found deep inspiration in the ever-changing light and atmosphere that surround her.

Molly’s practice is increasingly informed by a sensitivity to Country and an awareness of her position as a non-Indigenous artist working on Alyawarr and Anmatyerre-owned land. She approaches her work with respect for the cultural significance of the places around her, seeking permission from Traditional Owners before creating work within the landscape. These drawings come from the quiet time Molly spends in the Sandover River, representing her perception of the flora and fauna around her.

Her recent exhibition at Outstation Gallery marks a shift in her practice, moving beyond the depiction of the physical landscape towards a more considered engagement with the sacred nature of place. Rather than interpreting Country solely through a Western visual language, Molly is becoming more attentive to the limits of her own perspective, allowing this awareness to inform both her process and the work itself.
