Gretel Bull is a mixed-media artist working primarily in photography and sculpture. Her conceptual practice is concerned with exploring the tensions that exist between human and more-than-human subjects, and the scientific and mythological theories that define their relationships. Specifically, how these frameworks shape our physical reality and mediate our place within the larger eco- and cosmic systems.
These works are from the series, 'The tongue meets the flower, and the flower meets the tongue.'
This series takes it's title from Debra Rose Bird's article, 'Shimmer' (2017), describing the ecological importance of symbiotic mutualism between species. Rose argues against human exceptionalism - humans have always been part of the broader ecosystem but our persistent hegemonic anthropocentrism allows us to abstract ourselves, justifying environmental destruction.
Similarly, Isabelle Stegers' notion of reciprocal capture - transformative encounters between beings from whose differences the possibilities of new modes of existence emerge - implies that life flourishes in symbiosis.
'The tongue meets the flower, and the flower meets the tongue' builds on these concepts, repositioning self within ecosystem, and imagining instances of reciprocal capture where boundaries become permeable and strange new forms emerge.
