Anmatyerr artist Cindy Mpetyan Dixon from Arlparra Country, is the daughter of Jack Mbitjana Dixon and Molly Ngal Dixon, and sister to senior artists Sam Mpetyan Dixon and Kumanjayi Mpetyan Dixon. Cindy grew up in Arlparra with her family, playing on Country as a young girl and attending partial school at the Utopia Homestead, where a Troopy would collect the children each day.
Painting runs strongly through Cindy’s family, both woman and men have been painting for many years. Cindy’s work shares the story of Arnwekety, Bush Plum from her Country Arlparra, sharing the same story as renowned artists Angelina Ngal Pula and Kumanjayi Paddy. Cindy began her painting career 6 years ago, when Utopia Art Centre first opened. Having brought over knowledge and inspiration from observing her older brothers practice, Kumanjayi Mpetyan Dixon. Which has influenced her painting practice today. Cindy’s work is strongly recognised for its bold mark making and layering of colours.
Living with a physical disability on the remote Utopia Homelands, Cindy is determined to express herself through painting. With the strong support of her family, she shares her family’s story through her work. Painting brings her pride and happiness, and allows her to stay connected to Country, culture, and community while contributing her own voice to her family’s enduring artistic legacy.
