Yul Scarf’s second solo exhibition ‘PRIVATE PROPERTY’ presents a reflective gesture toward the conditions and events shaping life in Mparntwe (Alice Springs). The exhibition functions as a small mirror - not to provide answers - but to prompt recognition, memory, and responsibility.
The works invite acts of attention and resistance. Viewers must consider their own position: what does it mean to accept the terms of entry? Unlocking the ‘Land Back’ gate to PRIVATE PROPERTY becomes an act of consent — a threshold crossed into the work itself.
The paintings and drawings are responses to a series of short films, which also form an integral part of the exhibition. Together, they create a layered dialogue between moving image and mark-making, documentation and interpretation.
Throughout the exhibition, visitors are invited to play Adam Abdulatiff’s video game BASE CAMP, set within the local U.S. military installation at Pine Gap. The inclusion of the game extends the exhibition’s inquiry into surveillance, sovereignty, and occupation, once again shifting the audience from observer to participant.
