Gimala - To burn country is to cleanse country. To walk through smoke is a practice of letting go and cleansing the body of held spirits and energies that must go upwards with the smoke. As our old people did we practice in the making of fire through the use of Gimala our fire-sticks. Rubbing two sticks together sounds simple but there is more to it, there is more story to it and more reason than just to create an ember. This is the traditional design of the fire sticks for northern Queensland and Cape York Peninsula. Vast country needs to be well maintained and these fire-sticks were of high importance in regenerating country. Let our fire-sticks heal country.
